Present Matter – Graphic Language and Catalog
The graphic design of the Temporary Material exhibition and the annual catalog was created by Rony Schneider and Roni Ben Yosef of RoniveRony Studio – professional partners and “besties” since their Shenkar days. After designing the EdR 2022 award catalog, they faced a new challenge this year: creating a visual language that connects the depth of filmed interviews with the tactile character of the exhibition.
“The brief focused on conversations between senior and emerging designers, so we looked for a way to create a catalog centered around dialogue,” they explain. “We designed the texts in a script-like format, in a large font, with color differentiation between speakers—and at the end of each interview, we placed images of the finalist opposite them”
The next challenge was translating the graphic language into the three-dimensional gallery space:
“Working with stacks of cardboard required spatial thinking. We ran tests to understand how the stickers would hold on different faces and at different heights. It was a process of trial and error until the graphic language became a ‘body’ within the exhibition space.”
“Being part of this year, with industrial design at the center, was exciting and full of inspiration. The challenge was how to present so many material works in a defined space—and the curatorial decision to display them in two dimensions created a minimalist and precise outcome.”
Roni & Rony’s work successfully transformed a cross-generational conversation into a visual language that feels natural, vibrant, and present – both on paper and within the gallery space. The catalog is not just a documentary record, but a design object in its own right, holding the depth, reciprocity, and human perspective of the finalists.
