Present Matter – The Film ‘Design 22’
After experiencing the exhibition and browsing the catalog, the film Design 22 offers an intimate and in-depth view of the field. Through the camera lens, the dialogues come to life. The film, screened at the exhibition and based on 11 filmed interviews also included in the catalog, presents 22 insights on design, emerging from cross-generational encounters between emerging and senior designers.
The concept and content were edited by Lehi Berger, a Bezalel industrial design graduate specializing in service design, research, and creativity. “I enjoy challenges like this – taking a lot of material on a specific topic and distilling it into a coherent, strong, and engaging story. On a personal level, I feel like I’m always thinking about the next steps in my own path. In this process, hearing designers at different stages of their careers talk about their choices felt like receiving a compass for my own journey”
About the process, she says: “The hardest part was deciding what to leave out. I had 11 interviews with 22 talented designers, and the challenge was to pack them all into one film. Sometimes it was painful to leave important and moving segments on the editing room floor.”
The idea for the film emerged relatively late, after countless hours of watching raw footage and exploring different directions – it all came together in a moment of inspiration: “Right at the end, the idea for Design 22 was born – a film presenting 22 insights from the designers. I wanted to convey to the audience the insights I gained from the interviews in an accessible and clear way.”
Amnon Horesh, who has been accompanying the Edmond de Rothschild Design Award for five years, was responsible for filming and editing the interviews. “It was an exciting opportunity to see and hear both generations,” he says. “This year, for the first time, filmed interviews between emerging and senior designers took place. It was fascinating and moving to hear about the long, respected journeys of the senior designers alongside the achievements the emerging designers have already accomplished. Listening to them discuss how their paths often intersect in similar challenges and questions – like walking the same path, just at different times.”
