Anat Gutberg

Visual Communication

"As designers, we have the ability to gather various parts and combine them into something new in the world. We have the opportunity to create new meanings in the world around us, to connect to cultural, political, and historical contexts, and to offer different modes of interpretation for the viewer. Here lies the possibility of leaving things somewhat unresolved. Not fully settled. Not unequivocal, with plenty of room for interpretation. I believe in the power of observation as a primary tool with which to approach any project and start from there. First and foremost - to observe, without any interference, to try and understand the raw material, its nature, and characteristics. To respect what already exists in the field, to understand what is important to preserve and what can be relinquished."

Anat Gutberg is a graphic designer whose work oscillates between profound seriousness and great responsibility, and lightness of mind, freedom, and playfulness. Gutberg focuses on discoveries and surprises that occur when she allows boundaries and rules to loosen, and believes in processes that arise from the material and from life experiences. In her work, Gutberg often uses raw materials from archives, placing them in new contexts and seeking moments of unexpected discovery and change. She works extensively in the digital environment, utilizing the possibilities of time and sound, and finds special interest in moving images and animated formats.

Anat Gutberg was nominated for the 2024 Edmond de Rothschild Design Award for Emerging Visual Communication Designers.
